The Cultural Society of Post Graduate Government College for Girls, Sector-11, Chandigarh in collaboration with SPICMACAY and Chandigarh Sangeet Natak Academy organised a Sitar Recital by Padma Shree Ustaad Shahid Parvez today. He was accompanied by Shri Hindole Majumdar on Tabla.
He is one of the most brilliant musical gems of the famous Etawah Gharana and belongs to the seventh generation of this musical lineage.Trained by his father and guru, Ustad Aziz Khan, he is devotedly carrying forward the musical tradition of the family committed to the most famous Indian instrument.


He is the recipient of numerous prestigious awards including the coveted’Padma Shri’ and ‘SangeetNatak Academy Award’, Sur Shringaar, Kumar GandharvaSamman and M. L. Koser Award.One of the greatest sitar-players of the world, he has performed in all major musical festivals in India and abroad including the Festival of India held in the US, Europe, USSR, Canada, Middle East, Africa and Australia, enthralling the audience everywhere.
For Ustad Shahid Parvez Khan, the Sitar and Self are identical entities, and music is not just a discipline but life itself – vibrating and pulsating and full of colour. The faculty and students benefitted a lot from the presentation.
Ustaad Shahid Parvez started his performance with RAAG BHIM PLASI. He mesmerised the audience with JOR-ALAAP, BANDISH and JHALA. The first composition was set in TAAL MAT (Beat of Nine Matras). He concluded the performance in EK TAAL.
The Sitar Maestro said that Indian music has a great spiritual value. Music is not only for entertainment but for self-actualization.
Padma Shree Ustaad Shahid Parvez and Shri Hindole Majumdar were honoured by Shri Kamal Arora, Chairperson Chandigarh Sangeet Natak Academy, Mr. Kanwar Iqbal and Prof. Nirupma Luthra.
