The Post Graduate Government College for Girls-11, Chandigarh which was awarded as the Best Maintained College Campus in the just concluded 47th Rose Festival added another feather in its cap today: Windrow Composting, a pioneer successful attempt in City beautiful.

Organic waste and its management is a global concern, and in Chandigarh it amounts to almost 70% of the total waste generated. Windrow composting is a recent and simple biological process, but a versatile method which is being prominently used in Indore and Bangalore. Its main utilization is for stabilization of organic matter and its conversion into valuable soil thereby improving its physical properties. It reduces risks of odour, decreases soil and water pollution and maintains optimum Carbon and Nitrogen ratio (C:N). All food waste (100%) from the college food-service operations is collected in windrow composting plant and compost is generated. This compost is used on college land including landscaping, maintenance of lawns and raising of flower beds, making it an organic college. The Chief Guest of the inauguration function, Prof. Anita Kaushal, Principal of the college, lauded the efforts of Programme Coordinator Dr. Vishal Sharma and stressed on restoration of environmental degradation and making the campus fully organic.
