Vice President Mohammad Hamid Ansari addressed 66th Annual Convocation of Panjab University

The 66th Panjab University convocationwas held today. On the occasion, Vice President
of India and Chancellor of Panjab University (PU) Shri M.Hamid Ansari awarded
Sahitya Rattan to Prof Dalip Kaur Tiwana, Kala Rattan to actor Anupam Kher and
Vigyan Rattan to renowned scientist prof PD Gupta.
The Vice President conferred Honorary Degrees D.Litt. (Honoris Causa) to Prof Murli
Manohar Joshi, Prof GS Khush and Prof Nuruddin Farah.
During the ceremony, as many as 325 students were awarded PhD degrees, 1 DSc, 213
University Gold Medals, 5 Special University Medals, 45 Endowments Gold Medals, 10
Endowment Silver Medals, 38 merit certificates and 24 cash prizes. Also, 18 students
were awarded for declamation contests.
In addition to above, 474 students were rewarded degrees.

Prof Arun K. Grover, Vice Chancellor, in his address, showed a glimpse of PU through
a short film produced by School of Communication Studies. He welcomed the guests and
referred to the historical event of first inaugural convocationwhich took place on
November 18, 1882, when the then Viceroy of India Lord Rippon was the Chief Guest,
and he presented the degree of Doctor of Oriental Learning (Honoris Causa) to Mr.
Gottlieb Wilhelm Leitner,the founder Principal of Govt. College Lahore and the
founder Registrar, PU.

He quoted from Viceroy Lord Rippon’s speech, “This institution should be managed and administered by leading men of the province,by this means, many a useful and practical lessons of self help and selfreliance will be afforded,
and a valuable training in the management of theirown affairs will be given to those who have to do with the conduct of institutions in India of PU’s description.”
