Edentulism is a State of being partially or completely without natural teeth. In India, nearly 60 million people suffer from this malady. Until recently, patients only had two suitable treatment options — removable dentures and dental implant surgery. Approximately 40% of patients choose removable dentures but it only restores 10% of the normal teeth function & a conventional dental implant surgery takes too long which adds to cost and time.
However, a breakthrough has been made by world-renowned European implantologist Dr. Paulo Malo who has refined the implant technique called All-on-4® treatment concept. The treatment protocol was showcased threadbare at ‘All on 4 Surgical Protocol & Immediate Function Course’ – Rehabilitation Protocol for Eduentulism in Max Superspeciality Hospital, Mohali. Course convener Dr Gaurav Malik, Director & Head, Department of Dentistry, Max Superspeciality Hospital, Mohali organized the workshop.
“This technique essentially means that ‘All teeth on only four dental implants’. This ingenious dental implant protocol was specifically innovated to provide edentulous or soon-to-be edentulous patients with a new, non-removable bridge supported by only four strategically placed dental implants.” explained Dr Malo.
Commenting on the significance of this technique in acute dental disorders, Dr Malik said that the All-on-4 is a breakthrough in dental technology and has been designed to keep the patient’s needs and concerns at the forefront. “Earlier we had to refuse patients a traditional denture treatment due to compromised & deficient bones, but now even such patients can get a set of fixed teeth using the All on 4 protocol.” he elaborated.
Speaking on the occasion, Sandeep Dogra, Senior Vice President said that this new minimally invasive state of the art surgery protocol has advantages which have the power to revolutionise the way patients are treated. In fact, patients stand to gain the most from ‘All on 4’. Benefits include – the procedure needs no bone grafting, it allows patients to walk out the same day with functional teeth & third but not the least the All-on-4® treatment concept is more cost effective. This is so due to the fact that it only requires four implants, no grafting is needed and it is done in a short surgery that lasts for 1.5-2 hours.
It is pertinent to mention here that traditional methods could take as long as 12-18 months for complete recovery, thereby delaying relief & pushing up costs. This problem is obviated by the ‘All on 4’ protocol.
It is noteworthy that the Pioneer of ‘All on 4’ — Dr Paulo Malo is on a visit to Tricity on an invitation from Department of Dentistry, Max Superspeciality Hospital, Mohali. Here he with his team that comprises of Dr Gunaseelan Rajan a renowned Oral & Maxillo-Facial Surgeon based in Chennai, who is the First Indian Oral Surgeon to implement All on 4 processes, is conducting a 2 day interactive programme on the technique.
