DIVYA AZAD

SPEAK India (Society for Promotion of Ethical & Affordable Health Care) organized a workshop for selected Government school teachers at Government Girls Senior Secondary School, Sector 18 C, on ‘healthy life or Hospitals-the choice is yours’. Welcoming Mr. Balkar Sidhu Director Tagore Theatre; the chief guest for the occasion and other guests Principal of the school Mrs. Raj Bala , underlined a big role of schools and teachers in imparting health education to the community.

Speaking on the occasion Dr. R.Kumar a senior eye specialist & President of SPEAK called upon the teachers and the youth to inculcate healthy habits to usher in Healthy India.  He emphasized on leading a healthy life through the use of appropriate foods, regular yoga & exercises, adequate sleep. He also focused on young children’s habits that lead to poor health. He gave the example of a 10 year obese child who developed juvenile diabetes due to wrong food habits. “I asked the teachers to advise their respective school canteens, to set a good example by banning fried foods, high carbohydrate foods and colas and teas and make a paradigm shift to fruits, sprouts, curds etc.” Said Dr Kumar.

Adds Dr Kumar, “Most symptoms that take a person to a doctor or hospital are trivial & self limiting. Most of the times these symptoms are caused by lack of sleep that may be due to underlying stress. The consultation of a doctor should be necessary if common issues like abuse of mobile/TV, dehydration, improper foods, anemia and stress are ruled out.”

The teachers were informed that SPEAK India plans to continue its campaign of ‘health promotion through education’ by holding one act play competition, skit competition, Kavi sammelan, Wakathon, yoga competition, debates etc.
