The Orthopedics Team at Fortis Hospital Mohali successfully operated a 50-year-old patient, Harjeet Kaur, who was suffering from a broken hip implant and broken thigh bone. Owing to the broken hip implant, the patient had restricted mobility for almost one month as she was unable to move and was bedridden for quite some time. Her previous metastatic breast cancer made the case more complex as she had an irradiation to the bone due to which the bone quality had deteriorated.
The team of doctors led by Dr Sandeep Gupta, Senior Consultant, Orthopedics, Fortis Hospital Mohali, successfully operated on the Patient, Harjeet Kaur, who had a broken femoral stem on the previous hip replacement along with broken femur bone. Dr.Gupta performed the procedure through the ‘FAITH protocol’ – Fast-track Anatomic Implantation of Total Hip. FAITH Protocol requires pre-operative meticulous planning as a patient-specific implant is inserted. The procedure helps restore anatomy and muscle tension.
At admission, the patient complained of acute pain in the hip joint along with restricted mobility. She had met Dr Sandeep Gupta at Fortis Hospital Mohali. Dr. Gupta apprised the patient about the condition of the hip joint and suggested that Redo Hip Replacement would be the ideal treatment option, wherein a broken hip replacement is changed to a new hip replacement.
As the patient had a broken femoral stem on the previous hip replacement along with a broken femur bone, the team of doctors led by Dr. Sandeep Gupta had to meticulously plan the removal of the old broken implant without causing any further damages to the bone, along with insertion of the implant. Patient Harjeet Kaur, underwent a two-hour-long surgery, wherein her limb length and muscle tension was restored to near normal. She was mobilised the next day with a walker and discharged four days after the surgery. The procedure helps restore anatomy and muscle tension in the patient.
Following good rehabilitation at Fortis Hospital Mohali, the patient is leading a normal life today and is able to do her routine activities without any support.
Dr Sandeep Gupta, Senior Consultant, Orthopedics, Fortis Hospital Mohali, said, “We conducted the surgery by following the ‘FAITH protocol’ – Fast-track Anatomic Implantation of Total Hip. A dedicated hip replacement team allows a quick and safe surgery along with restoration of the anatomical limb length and muscle tension without additional damage to the bone. This enables patients to resume their normal daily activities within the first few days of the surgery. Fortis Hospital Mohali is the first hospital in North India to have a dedicated hip replacement unit.”
“Hip replacement is a successful surgery and if performed in a dedicated hip-replacement unit, patients can hope to resume their normal daily activities even after complex situations procedures like redo surgery,” added Dr Gupta.
All praise for the treatment received at Fortis Hospital Mohali, the Patient Harjeet Kaur, said, “Dr Sandeep Gupta offered me the best line of treatment. I suggest Revision Hip Replacement for people with similar health conditions.”
