Confederation of Indian Industry organised a Session on Community Engagement for Green Village Development at Panchayat Centre, Derabassi. More than 40 sarpanches and panchayat members from Dera Bassi block participated in the ‘Session on Community Engagement for Green Village development’, organised by CII and facilitated by the Ministry of Rural Development and Panchayati Raj, Punjab, to mark the World Environment Day today.

Sarpanches of Jeoli, Jandli, Sarsaini, Karkour, Shekhpur, Malakhpur, Paragpur and Pukri villages came forward to adopt the ‘CII Green Village Programme’ in their respective villages at the event.

 A.K. Jaswal, MD, Hindustan Constructions Limited, Past Chairman, IGBC, Chandigarh Chapter, said, “Entire community needs to work towards making our villages self- sustaining. CII CSR & IGBC expand these informative awareness sessions all over Punjab and share an evaluation report with the Department of Rural Development, Punjab as well. It is heartening to see that Sarpanches of Jeoli, Jandli, Sarsaini, Karkour, Shekhpur, Malakhpur, Paragpur and Pukri villages have expressed interest in implementing CII Green Village initiative. These villages will be evaluated for implementation of the initiative and a report will be submitted to the Department of Rural Development, Punjab. The success of Dera Bassi block will be emulated all over the state.”

Punit Aggarwal, Counselor, IGBC, said, “CII has launched first of its kind initiative to rate the villages and evaluate their growth potential on various growth parameters such as employment opportunities, water management, rainwater harvesting, solar energy or renewable energy, use of bio gas plants, sewerage treatment facilities, health, education indicators etc. A Green Village is one which offers access to clean energy, adequate water supply, basic education, good healthcare, hygiene, sanitation which lead to economic prosperity and enhanced quality of life besides sustaining the environment. The initiative has registered success in Haryana, Maharashtra, Gujarat and Manipur.”
