P.G. Department of Sociology of Post Graduate Government College for Girls, Sector-11, Chandigarh organised a One-day Workshop on “Research Ethics, Plagiarism and quality research papers” today. The Workshop was organised under the aegis of RUSA, Chandigarh Administration. More than 100 delegates including faculty members, research scholars and students participated in the Workshop.

Prof. Anita Kaushal, Principal of the college welcomed the Chief Guest, the speakers and delegates from other colleges. Prof. Rama Arora, Dean, and Mr. Kanwar Iqbal Singh, Vice-Principal of the college also graced the occasion.

Prof. Nirupama Luthra, Head, P. G. Department of Sociology introduced the theme of the Workshop. Prof. O. P. Katare, Director Research, Panjab University, Chandigarh was the key-note speaker on the occasion. Congratulating the college for conducting the Workshop on an academically relevant theme he in his Presidential address, observed that the contemporary research has become API-driven thereby deteriorating its quality. Researchers should pursue wisdom-driven research and the philosophy underlying research must have its roots in one’s conscience.

In the 1st Technical Session, Prof. Gurcharan Singh, Head, School of Management, Punjabi University, Patiala made his presentation on ‘Plagiarism: Conceptual and Methodological Issues’. Citing examples of plagiarism from academic domain, he highlighted the consequences of using unethical means in research. He made the session interesting and interactive by using music videos depicting cases of plagiarism.

In the 2nd Technical Session, Prof. Manjit Singh, Head, School of Applied Management, Punjabi University, Patiala spoke about ‘Writing good research papers’. He dwelled into the intricacies of research methodology. Stressing the importance of review of literature, he remarked that it should be an extensive, sincere and serious exercise instead of making the research voluminous.

In the 3rd Technical Session, Dr. Neeraj Kumar, Assistant Librarian, A. C. Joshi Library, Panjab University, Chandigarh made his presentation on ‘Plagiarism detection tools and techniques’. He demonstrated the use of softwares like turn-it-in and urkund for detection and removal of plagiarism from research papers’.

Principal, Prof. Anita Kaushal felt that the Workshop will surely prove to be a guiding force for the delegates and they will conduct a conscience-based realistic research.

Dr. Manoj Kumar from P. G. Department of Sociology proposed a vote of thanks.
