A two-day national seminar on the theme “Trends and Issues in Social
Development” commenced in the Department of Sociology, Panjab University today. The
Seminar was inaugurated by Vice Chancellor Prof. Arun Grover who spoke on how
technology has opened up new vistas in life and has made the youth more capable and
how the regional, national boundaries are blurring as technology progresses. Prof.
Sucha Singh Gill spoke on the relevance of rural development vis-a-vis economic
growth. Prof. Amrit Srinivasan in her keynote address broached the gender question
and focused on the subject of today’s independent single women in India. In his
special lecture, Prof. S.L. Sharma raised the fundamental question of developing a
sociological perspective and school of thought on the concept of ‘social’
development.
