University Institute of Fashion Technology(UIFT), Panjab University(PU) hosted the
final judgment for its annual design collections today, in which 13 collections were
selected for the final ramp walk. The designs prepared by the students of MSc at
UIFT this year reflect excellence in the field of fashion technology with finer
execution of theory and are a perfect amalgamation of design, style, class and
garment technology. The immensely talented students of MSc presented their work to
an external jury after months of toil and hard work for the upcoming annual design
collection finale titled Shears and Ruban on April 12. Gurpreet Boparai, Managing
Director, No Exit Pvt Ltd, judged the 13 collections.
A kids collection called lap interlocking was prepared by one of the students which
comprised patch work and interlocking style.  While certain collections were
inspired by folk art using raw silk and organza giving it a complete traditional
feel while others were more experimental and used leather to create twilight
radiance, a collection inspired by the luminous starlit night. Students have blended
traditional art form like Phulkari with Tie and Dye to create a fresh ensemble using
chinon, chiffon and crepe.

Phulkari is a symbolic of a Punjabi’s Pride, and this coupled with a tie and dye
twist makes it even more interesting to wear it on an Indian wedding, says a UIFT
final semester student.
Another collection was inspired by roses and was titled garden fashion. The fabric
used was supple satin with taffeta and befittingly it welcomes the spring season,
with crop tops, palazzos, frocks, shift dresses and flowey capes as a part of the
same rose and strawberry collection. Yet another collection was inspired by the
Indian splendor and charm. The collection was prepared by reusing old hand
embroideries with antique jewellery and leather accessories.

Students have been really experimental this time and have designed outfits keeping
in mind the current trends in the fashion business and inspired by commoners on the
streets,ťsaid Dr Prabhdip Brar, Coordinator,  Annual Design Collection  (Shears &
Ruban).
Prof Swarnjit, Coordinator, UIFT & VD, added that April 12, Wednesday, would be a
special day for the department students, since it is a display of their persistent
efforts and creativity in the final fashion show.
