Confederation of Indian Industry organised the first in a series of a campaign to promote modern farming practices at the Innovative Farmers’ Meet at Prime Farms, Moga today. A Session on ‘Dairy Farming: Challenges & Opportunities’ and an exhibition of farm products was also be held on the occasion.
The campaign is being organised by CII, in association with the Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare, Government of India, & Mehram Publication from 4 May to 16 June 2017 in Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh.
Addressing farmers from the region, Dr Harjot Kamal Singh, Member Legislative Assembly, Moga, Government of Punjab, said, “The government of Punjab is committed to bringing in change by way of awareness among farmers to adopt modern farm techniques. The initiative of CII in this direction is highly appreciable and the response to the same is evidence to the immense support among farmers to adopt new farm technology.”
Mr Sukhjit Singh, Member Legislative Assembly, Dharamkot, Government of Punjab, said, “The government is committed towards diversification from traditional to modern agriculture. Technology upgrade is a must for farmers of the region and steps such as CII Innovative Farmers Meets are a welcome step in this direction. ”
Mr Inderjit Singh, Director, Dairy Development Department, Government of Punjab, said, “Modernisation of farm techniques and practices to suit the new demands of today is a must. He said with the modernisation of dairy sector, dairy farmers from the region can achieve great heights. To achieve world-class standards, dairy farmers must adopt latest techniques in the sector, he added.
Dr Sahiba Mann Grewal, Assistant Professor – Animal Science, Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Moga, spoke on ‘Best Practices in Dairy Cattle Management’, “For making dairying a profitable and, sustainable venture, it is important for the dairy farmer to adopt scientific practices that would lead to increased productivity at optimum costs. For this to happen, the farmer should be aware of the basic tenets of animal health, breeding and feeding.”
Speaking on ‘Cattle Health Management’, Dr Harveen Kaur Dhaliwal, Sr Veterinary Officer, Government of Punjab, said, “Adopting modern practices such as maintaining cleanliness to meet world standards of quality is a must for dairy farmers. This would not only lead to modernization of dairy sector but dairy farmers will also reap huge profits.”
Speaking on Women Empowerment through Dairy Farming, Ms Aman Bjaj, Assistant Manager, Corporate Affairs, Nestle India Ltd, said, “Dairy farming can most effectively empower women in rural areas is farmers also include their families especially women in the sector.”
The objective is to provide sustainable livelihood to farmers, educating them on various government schemes, modern farming techniques, adopting latest technologies available to increase productivity and quality of crops,diversify into cash crops, floriculture, horticulture and livestock – dairy, fishery, piggery, bee keeping etc.
