A team of doctors at Fortis Hospital, Mohali performed a landmark procedure by using an advanced technology Rotablation to treat a 66 years old male patient with severe calcified stony hard arterial blockages as suggested by Angiography. Although he was advised to undergo cardiac bypass surgery, the new technology helped with a solution that discarded the need for multiple stents or a bypass surgery. The team was led by Dr R K Jaswal, Director, Cath Lab, Fortis Hospital, Mohali.

The patient was brought in an emergency condition to the hospital. Although he was advised bypass surgery, the team of doctors decided to employ this unique technique to avoid multiple Coronary Arterial Bypass Grafting (CABG) procedures. With the Rotablation technique, the amount of calcium in the arteries was modified and cracked, thus making stenting possible in this patient. The patient responded well to the treatment and was discharged completely healthy.

Speaking about the latest technology, Dr R K Jaswal said, “For many years, interventional cardiologists have been trusting their experienced eyes to diagnose and plan treatment after analyzing a coronary angiography for the treatment of Coronary Artery Disease (CAD). Over the years, with all the latest technologies available and gaining expertise on them, we have tried to develop Fortis Mohali’s Department of Cardiac Sciences as a Centre of Excellence for treatment of highly calcified coronary artery disease using advanced therapy advanced technologies like Rotablation, Intravascular Lithotripsy, Fractional Flow Reserve (FFR) and Optical coherence tomography (OCT).”

Dr Jaswal further added, “A very small percentage of operators in the world have access and proficiency in these advanced therapy options which offer exceptionally high quality and safe treatment for complex coronary artery disease patients. Our team is one of the most experienced in these high end technologies like Rotablation in the entire upper north India’s and fortunately have these facilities available at Fortis Mohali round-the-clock on shelf for those 20 percent patients of CAD. Such patients need not travel to US or Singapore for these high end coronary interventions.”
